Le 8 février 2005 Jimmy Smith décédait, à 79 ans. Maître incontesté de l'orgue jazz (qui n'a pourtant jamais appris à lire la musique), c’est à Philadelphie, qu’il va découvrir la pratique de l’orgue électrique et cet instrument particulier qu’est le Hammond B3 et son vibrato exceptionnel dû à l’apport de la cabine Leslie.

Ses enregistrements réalisés entre 1956 et 1963 pour le label Blue Note sont des incontournables, en insèrant dans ses compositions des saveurs blues et gospel il élabore les lignes fondatrices du trio orgue-batterie-guitare en collaboration magique avec le guitariste Wes Montgomery (Jimmy & Wes : The Dynamic Duo, 1966), mais ses sessions avec les orchestres d’Oliver Nelson et de Lalo Schifrin pour le label Verve sont aussi mémorables (Bashin' - The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith, 1962 et The Cat, 1964). Sa production dans les années 70 sera moins essentielle, parfois limite, à l'exception du superbe Root Down (Verve, 1972).
Voilà du groove du vrai, peu importe de savoir s'il est jazz, soul-jazz ou be-bop puisqu'il est intemporel.

On February 8, 2005 Jimmy Smith died, at 79 years. Uncontested Master of the organ jazz (which however never learned how to read the music), it is in Philadelphia, which it will discover the practice of the electric organ and this particular instrument which is Hammond B3 and his vibrato exceptional due to the contribution of the Leslie cabin.

Its recordings carried out between 1956 and 1963 for the label Blue Note are essentials, whith savours of blues and gospel. It works out the lines founders of the trio organ-battery-guitar in magic collaboration with the guitarist Wes Montgomery (Jimmy & Wes: The Dynamic Duet, 1966), but its sessions with the orchestras of Oliver Nelson and Lalo Schifrin for the Verve label are also memorable (Bashin' - The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith, 1962 and The Cat, 1964).
Its production in the Seventies will be less essential, sometimes limit, except for superb Root Down (Liveliness, 1972).
